Advancing innovation for treating epilepsy and strengthening the scientific advisory board
ERLANGEN, Germany – cerbomed GmbH, today announced the appointment of Prof. Dr. Christian E. Elger to its scientific advisory board effective December 2010. Dr. Elger will advise and support cerbomed’s management in planning and carrying out the company’s pivotal multicenter study on the effectiveness of transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation (t-VNS) in patients with drug-resistant types of epilepsy.
Promising therapeutic potential
“I expect transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation to be a very promising and safe therapy with a tremendous potential, particularly for the treatment of patients with drug resistant epilepsy", said Prof. Elger, "I am very much looking forward to working with the scientific advisory board of cerbomed."
Trained in physiology and neurology, Prof. Elger is an internationally renowned epilepsy expert, and played an important role in previous VNS trials. In 1987, he became Professor of Epileptology at University Hospital for Epileptology in Bonn, Germany, and presently serves as Director of the University Hospital. Prof. Elger held the post of Chairperson of the German section of the International League Against Epilepsy, was president of the German society for Clinical Neurophysiology (DGKN) and served as spokesperson of the Transregional Collaborative Research Center. Prof. Elger is associate editor of several professional journals, and has published many peer reviewed articles in his branch. In 2010 he was awarded the prestigious "Hans Berger Prize" for his contribution to epileptology.
"The support of an expert as renowned as Prof. Elger shows how highly the potential of our technology for epileptology is rated,” commented Prof. Dr. Jens Ellrich, Chief Medical Officer, at Cerbomed, "Prof. Elger’s knowledge and experience are of great importance for the organization of our forthcoming effectiveness study."
Cerbomed is a privately held, medical device company based in Erlangen, Germany, aiming to become the leader for the development of non-invasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) therapies. The company was founded in 2005 to develop and commercialize its proprietary, transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation (t-VNS) technology and devices for therapeutic uses. NEMOS products comprise the world’s first non-invasive VNS device enabling specific electrical brain stimulation. The company has received a CE-mark for NEMOS in Europe.
t-VNS is applied to the left outer ear, over the auricular branch of the vagus nerve, where it stimulates the nerve transcutaneously. Cerbomed therefore expects t-VNS to offer a highly attractive and cost-effective alternative to current and emerging VNS treatments, other neurostimulation methods, surgery or pharmacologic therapies.
